Service Description
Tour Duration: 6 Hours (35 Person Minimum per booking) Location: Dorchester & Caroline County **Lunch is not included.** It combines the activities of our two half-day tours with visits to significant Underground Railroad sites including those in Dorchester County -- where she was born and enslaved for 27 years -- and adjoining Caroline County, where she returned several times to lead escapees to freedom following the North Star. We begin in Cambridge and travel to the Courthouse (site of Harriet’s first rescue) and Long Wharf, where the enslaved were transported by ship. We’ll also see the “Take My Hand Mural,” painted on the Harriet Tubman Museum and Educational Center building. Traveling into Tubman Country, we stop at the Stanley Institute, a historic African American one-room schoolhouse and visit the Harriet Tubman Underground Railroad Visitor Center. You see Brodess Farm, Harriet’s childhood home (when she was known as Araminta/Minty Ross) and view the Bucktown General Store where she was hit by a 2-lb. weight thrown at her head -- the storied source of spiritual visions leading to her freedom. After breaking for a box lunch, we move on to Caroline County and drive by the Jacob and Hannah Leverton Home, one of the UGRR station house in the region. At Webb Cabin – a well-preserved hand-hewn log home – we see where free Black farmer James Webb lived with his enslaved wife and their four children in a single room. A drive by the Mount Pleasant Church cemetery, takes us back to the secret UGRR meeting place that Harriet Tubman used to unite with escapees she was assisting. The tour concludes at Linchester Mill – a historic grist mill –where free and enslaved Blacks worked together and shared information with nearby Quakers who helped escapees passing through the area. The tour begins at the Dorchester County Visitor Center – 2 Rose Hill Place, Cambridge, MD. and ends at Linchester Mill, 3390 Linchester Rd., Preston, MD
